PVC vs Metal Ducting for Chemical Extraction

PVC and metal ducting need to be compared against the actual extract stream and installation. Chemical compatibility, temperature, construction and building requirements come before a general preference for plastic or metal. Assess the complete duct system, including joints and connected equipment.

Make the comparison task-specific

  1. 01Define chemicals, concentration, temperature and moisture.
  2. 02Compare the exact polymer or metal system and its joints.
  3. 03Coordinate supports, access and building interfaces.

PVC ducting: assess the specified material

PVC can be a useful material for suitable chemical-extraction applications. Its suitability depends on the grade, chemical exposure, temperature and construction. It is not resistant to every substance or appropriate for every process.

Read the relevant chemical-resistance information with concentration, contact conditions and mixtures in mind. Pressure-pipe or domestic ventilation data should not automatically become a specification for fabricated chemical duct.

Review the joints, fittings, seals and connections as part of the system. A compatible duct wall does not compensate for an unsuitable connected component.

Metal ducting: identify the alloy and protection

Metal is also a family of options. Galvanised steel, stainless steels, aluminium and coated constructions have different properties. Identify the exact material or coating and assess it against the extract stream and cleaning conditions.

Corrosion can depend on concentration, temperature, moisture and exposure at seams or damaged coatings. A broad stainless or corrosion-resistant description needs supporting material information for the actual application.

Mechanical stiffness and temperature capability can be useful design considerations, but they do not eliminate the chemical review. The required construction and support remain project-specific.

Plastic vs metal ducting: compare the whole system

Material selection questions
FactorCompare
Chemical exposureExact material data for chemicals, mixtures, moisture and cleaners.
TemperatureOperating and abnormal conditions against the specified construction.
JointsWelds, flanges, seals, coatings and their inspection requirements.
InstallationWeight, supports, movement, assembly and service access.
Building interfacesThe project’s fire, penetration and structural requirements.

Obtain quotations for equivalent routes and scope. Straight-duct prices alone leave out fittings, supports, connections and installation work that can change the practical comparison.

PVC vs aluminium ducting is not just a weight choice

Aluminium is one metal option, not a synonym for all metal duct. Its chemical behaviour, construction and joints need assessment for the proposed extract. A lightweight ventilation product is not automatically a chemical-exhaust product.

Similarly, a PVC component used for one ventilation task should not be assumed suitable for another. Use the actual product and material data, including the intended pressure and temperature conditions.

Where the process presents combustible dust, flammable atmospheres or unusual heat, involve the appropriate specialist in the material and system design. Do not transfer advice from a hobby dust-collection installation to a laboratory chemical-extraction system.

Coordinate fabrication, building design and verification

Show the route through the building and identify penetrations, supports, access points and discharge connections. The project team needs to resolve fire and structural interfaces for the selected construction. Have the penetration and any fire-resisting system assessed as a complete installation.

For fabricated PVC, agree the joining and inspection requirements described in our PVC welding guide. If leakage testing is specified, define the test boundary and acceptance criteria before fabrication.

FumeCare supplies chemical-resistant PVC ducting. Bring us the operating conditions and route so the proposal can address the complete extraction task. Keep the accepted material schedule and commissioning information available for later process changes or extensions.

Questions about pvc vs metal ducting

Is PVC always better than metal for chemical fumes?

No. Compare the exact materials with the chemicals, concentration, temperature and installation requirements. The complete system needs to suit the process.

Can a material choice settle the building’s fire requirements?

No. The project’s fire and building interfaces need their own design assessment, including penetrations and the complete construction.

Start with the exposure and the route

Send the chemical list, operating temperatures, airflow schedule and proposed duct route. We can discuss chemical-resistant PVC ductwork and the project’s material-selection requirements.
