Centrifugal fan direction of rotation
Clockwise viewed from one side becomes anticlockwise viewed from the opposite side. That simple reversal is a common reason two drawings appear to disagree. Use the manufacturer’s stated viewing convention, such as the drive side, and write it beside the direction.
The wheel’s blade geometry also matters. Forward-curved and backward-curved wheels are designed to turn in a particular direction. Looking at the curve of a blade without identifying the wheel type can lead to the wrong conclusion. Follow the model drawing and rotation marking.
A fan may still move some air when rotating incorrectly. Confirm rotation and delivered duty with the appropriate commissioning checks.
Rotation is different from discharge orientation
Rotation describes the wheel’s movement. Discharge orientation describes where the casing outlet points. A correctly rotating fan can still have an unsuitable outlet position for the connected ductwork, access or drainage arrangement.
| Detail | Record |
|---|---|
| Rotation | Direction and viewing side. |
| Discharge | Outlet position on the manufacturer’s orientation drawing. |
| Drive arrangement | Motor location, coupling or belt arrangement and access requirements. |
Use a marked-up drawing when ordering a replacement. A photograph is helpful, but it may not show hidden connections or the exact reference view. Compare flange dimensions and service access as well as the outlet direction.
Safe checks during commissioning
Commissioning needs a controlled method that protects people from moving equipment and electrical hazards. The responsible technician should follow the fan and motor instructions, with guards, isolation arrangements and the work area addressed before testing.
Do not remove a guard or reach into an inlet to identify direction while the equipment is running. A commissioning record should state the verified direction and the method used, alongside speed and electrical checks. Any electrical correction belongs with the appropriately qualified person.
After direction is verified, measure the system’s performance at the intended operating settings. Include cupboard containment in the complete commissioning assessment alongside the rotation check.
If airflow remains low
Compare actual speed and operating conditions with the selection. Look for obstructions, unexpected resistance, incorrect damper positions and changes to the duct route. Review the inlet and discharge connections for fan system effect.
The manufacturer’s fan curve is the reference for comparing airflow and pressure at the correct speed and density. Avoid increasing speed simply to disguise an unresolved rotation or installation problem.
New vibration, scraping, overheating or a sudden performance change calls for a controlled assessment. For chemical extraction, coordinate any shutdown with the laboratory’s safe process arrangements so stopping the fan does not create a new exposure risk.
Prepare a replacement or repair enquiry
Include the model and serial number, nameplate speed and motor information, photographs from both accessible sides and the current airflow requirement. Mark the inlet and outlet on a simple layout. Explain whether the fan previously worked correctly and what changed.
For a new design, add the required airflow, pressure basis, chemical exposure and installation environment. Our Fumeflow D250 and TD250 selection guide sets out the wider selection inputs.
Keep the final approved drawing with the equipment record. It gives the next service technician a reliable reference and helps prevent a later replacement being ordered from an ambiguous clockwise description.
Questions about centrifugal fan rotation
Can a centrifugal fan blow air when rotating backwards?
It may still move air, but the delivered performance can be wrong. Use the manufacturer’s direction marking and a controlled commissioning check.
Can I reverse the motor myself?
Electrical changes should be made by an appropriately qualified person using the motor and fan instructions. The system needs its direction and performance verified afterwards.
