Baffles in a fume hood: keep the air path clear

Baffles shape the route air takes through a fume cupboard. We help laboratory teams assess cupboard condition and arrange servicing when panels, openings or the working layout need attention.

Recognise the rear air path

A baffle is an internal panel that helps distribute extraction behind the work area. Openings around or through the panel lead towards the exhaust plenum. The precise arrangement depends on the cupboard model.

Equipment pushed against the back panel can interfere with this route. For the wider picture, our guide to how a fume hood works follows air from the room to the discharge.

Set up around the openings

Review the actual apparatus arrangement before beginning work. Identify where air enters the cupboard, passes around equipment and leaves the enclosure. Keep the manufacturer’s required clearances, including space around rear openings.

  • Remove unused containers and equipment through the laboratory’s approved procedure.
  • Keep cables and hoses from covering slots or obstructing the sash.
  • Position bulky apparatus according to the equipment and cupboard instructions.
  • Ask for an assessment when a new setup substantially changes the internal space.

The safe-use guide provides the accompanying operator checks.

Record a problem without adjusting it

Useful information for a service enquiry
ObservationRecord
Panel damageLocation, cupboard identification and a photograph taken safely.
Visible obstructionWhat is covering the opening and when the setup changed.
Changed indicationAlarm message, operating state and recent building work.

Leave adjustable baffles in their documented position. Moving them to make an alarm disappear can change containment elsewhere in the enclosure.

Plan access and return to use

Cleaning behind panels and removing contaminated parts need a planned method, competent personnel and a clear handover. Agree who will make the cupboard safe, identify residues and confirm it is ready for service access.

Our cleaning guide covers the preparation questions. A service review can then address the condition of the components and any testing needed before use resumes.

If airflow patterns need investigation after a change, ask about the scope of airflow visualisation and the other checks required for the installation.
