Using a fume hood: a practical checklist

Prepare the task, check the cupboard’s operating status and keep the working area clear. Use this checklist alongside your training, laboratory procedure and the instructions for your installed model.

Before you start

Confirm that your laboratory’s risk assessment covers the chemicals, quantities and method you intend to use. Check that the cupboard is suitable for the task and that you know how to respond to an alarm or spill.

  • Identify the cupboard and its operating instructions.
  • Check the required operating status before introducing hazardous work.
  • Set the sash to the labelled working position.
  • Bring only the apparatus and substances needed for the task.
  • Keep the front opening and airflow paths clear.

If the status is abnormal or the task falls outside the approved procedure, resolve that with the supervisor before starting.

Arrange the task inside the chamber

Position apparatus according to the model instructions and your laboratory procedure. Include tubing, leads and waste containers in the arrangement. Keep your head outside the opening and work through the sash opening at the prescribed position.

For example, adding a large instrument changes the available working space and the airflow around the task. Have that arrangement assessed rather than treating an empty-chamber test as approval for every setup.

During the work

Use work methods that limit unnecessary release of vapours. Keep movements near the opening controlled and avoid clutter building up during the procedure. Observe the cupboard’s status and follow the laboratory response if an alarm or suspected containment problem occurs.

Leave control settings, sensors and service components to authorised personnel. Our servicing guide helps you record a fault for the technician.

For a clear fault report, use our airflow-alarm checklist. Read the sash guide if the working-position label or movement needs attention.

At the end of the task

Complete the process under the approved procedure, remove waste and return chemicals to appropriate storage. Leave the chamber ready for the next user and record any fault or unusual event.

Follow the installed model’s shutdown sequence and any required continued extraction. Keep extraction running for as long as the approved procedure requires, including after the task where specified. Keep operating instructions and the asset record accessible to the team.
