Start with the air path
A conventional ducted fume cupboard draws air through the enclosure and discharges it outside through an extraction system. A ductless hood uses specified filters before returning air to the room. Some specialist ducted systems include additional treatment for their assessed application.
Look at the model instructions and system drawings rather than assuming every hood has a replaceable filter. If the installation is unfamiliar, give the facilities team or service technician the equipment identification.
Follow the components in our ducted-system explainer to identify where air travels in that arrangement.
Particle filtration and vapour control are different
HEPA filtration captures particles; chemical gases and vapours need a suitable control method for the substances involved. Filters intended for chemical vapours need to be matched to the assessed substances and operating conditions.
For a filtered enclosure, identify the approved application, specified filter, monitoring arrangements and replacement procedure. Changes in chemicals or workload need review with the responsible laboratory and equipment specialists.
Collect the right information
- Cupboard or enclosure make, model and asset number.
- Operating manual and any available system drawing.
- Chemicals and processes currently used.
- Any filter or treatment equipment identified in the records.
- Recent service work, faults or changes in operation.
For example, a request for a “fume hood filter” is difficult to assess without the model and application. A label photograph and the relevant manual page help establish which equipment is actually installed.
Discuss the Calibre extraction arrangement
We manufacture Calibre fume cupboards and Fumeflow fans. Our fan-selection guide helps identify the cupboard and fan pairing for a project or replacement enquiry.
If you are comparing methods for a new laboratory, use our ducted and ductless comparison to prepare the chemical and building questions. For an existing system, keep servicing within the instructions for its actual configuration and refer uncertain components to the appropriate technician.
