Hoods and glove boxes

Fume hood or glove box: compare the task

A fume hood provides an open working enclosure with inward airflow. A glove box separates the working space from the room through an enclosed chamber and gloves. Choose between them by the task, hazards and atmosphere required.

Decide what the task needs

Start with the substances, quantities and process. Identify whether the task needs chemical-vapour extraction, a controlled atmosphere, specialised containment or a combination assessed by the laboratory’s responsible specialists.

A glove box may be configured for atmosphere control or for a particular containment application. Its name alone does not describe every protection it provides. Review the specified model and process together.

How is the task accessed?Through the prescribed front sash opening.Through gloves and the specified transfer arrangement.
What air arrangement matters?Inward airflow, extraction and the surrounding room. The chamber’s specified pressure, gas and treatment arrangement.
What does the operator need to check?Working space, sash position and suitability for the approved chemical task.Glove handling, transfer steps and suitability for the required atmosphere or containment.
What changes need review?New chemicals, apparatus or operating conditions.New materials, transfer methods or chamber conditions.

Think through one complete procedure

Describe how materials enter, how the operator handles them and how waste and apparatus leave. Include cleaning, abnormal events and the space needed for the whole process.

For example, a task needing a controlled atmosphere asks different equipment questions from an assessed chemical procedure that needs extraction at an open working face. The procedure, rather than the visual appearance of an enclosure, should guide the selection.

If the task instead concerns biological material or clean product handling, our biosafety cabinet comparison and clean-bench comparison explain those separate choices.

Prepare a chemical-extraction enquiry

For a chemical fume cupboard project, send us the task description, substances, apparatus dimensions and available building information. We manufacture Calibre fume cupboards and can discuss the suitable cupboard and extraction arrangement.

Our Calibre model comparison sets out the range’s different configurations. Confirm the intended application before choosing the working width, access and controls.

Use the quotation scope worksheet to compare the proposed equipment and building work once the containment method is settled.

Discuss your chemical-extraction task

Tell us what the work involves and what containment the assessment requires. We’ll help you discuss a Calibre cupboard and extraction system for the application.
